ycling. The tree-shaded banks of the Rigole du Canal du Midi are ideal for walking and cycling and a good starting point for exploring the area. The rigole also follows the contours of the countryside; a big advantage for the gradient-averse, fair weather cyclists among us.

Itinerary 1 (30 mins). Turn left on to the farm track by the entrance to the house. Cross Race you to the gate and back... the rigole and turn left. When you go back over the stream, watch out for the local farmer's boxer dogs - it's best to stop when they come woofing up! Within 10 minutes you will arrive at a small lake [Lac de Lenclas] with a Restaurant Cafe. Return via the road, heading south on the D67 going left onto the D67d at Graissens, between the church and graveyard.

Itinerary 2a ( 30 mins). Turn left out of house onto the Revel road. At the bottom of the hill turn right on to the path by the rigole. Keep on going until you meet the main Revel/Castelnaudary road [D624] then turn around and retrace your steps.

Itinerary 2b (1 hour+). At the main Revel/Castelnaudary road,  cross the road and continue to follow the rigole, keeping the stream on your right hand side for as long as you want, then turn around and retrace your steps.

Itineray 2c (2 hours). At the main Revel/Castelnaudary road, turn right onto the road, then take first left after approx. 200m.  At the T junction go left and follow the signs for Bassin de St Ferréol. At the next T junction at the top go left - right and then left work as well. Turn left onto the road from the lake down to Revel. When in Revel look out for the rigole on the left and take this all the way home.

olf. The web site of the Ligue de Golf de Midi-Pyrenees lists 34 golf courses in the region. Our Golfing Correspondent, JR, has set himself the task of playing them all: "Well somebody's got to do it,"  says JR, "and it might as well be me". His progress thus far, is reported below. Look out for the red flag on the maps.

Carcassonne. Great hilly 18 hole Golf Course but very busy in the summer. Worth taking a voiturette - golf car. Go to Castelnaudary, take the autoroute  to Carcassonne from Castelnaudary. Take the first Carcassonne exit [for the airport], go right at the first roundabout, left at the t-junction and then take the first main right turn, signposted La Cité. Just after going under the motorway, fork right off of the main road [sign-posted Golf]. If you get a view of La Cité, you have gone too far!

Mazamet (La Barouge). Quiet 18 hole course in pine woodland north of the Black Mountain. Take D622 from Revel to Castres. Turn right onto the D621 at Soual, signposted to Labruguière and Mazamet. Approx 4 km after Labruguière turn left, signposted Caucalières and Payrin. At the t-junction in Payrin, go right and then take 2nd left, signposted Pont de Larn. The clubhouse is approx 2 km on left - the course is on the right.

Vieille Toulouse. 18 holes, not yet played by our intrepid golf correspondent. Note that Vieille Toulouse is NOT in the centre of Toulouse but 9km south-east of Toulouse as we know it; lucky, because that means there is plenty of space for a golf course. Take the D622 from St Félix Lauragais towards Toulouse. Turn left to Villefranche Lauragais (better to take the 2nd left choice of the D25 and not the D622). Turn right onto the N113 (DO NOT take the autoroute), go left at Castanet and outside Castanet turn right on to the D95, which is (with luck) signposted to Vieille Toulouse.

Viterbe (Etangs de Fiac). Michelin suggests the direct route across country, north from St-Félix on the D67/D67D. JR advises go north from Revel on the road to Castres, taking  left onto the D84 through Puylaurens and on to St Paul where you turn left onto the D112 towards Lavaur. After 5.5km turn right to Viterbe. Look out for the golf course after crossing the river.

alking.

The tree-shaded banks of the Rigole du Canal du Midi offer ideal shelter for walking, even during the heat of the day. An interesting landmark on the walk west in the direction of Lac de Lenclas is the aqueduct (pictured) where the rigole and, conveniently, the towpath cross the Revel-Castelnaudary railway line.
